SPF 30 and SPF 50 block almost the same amount of UV rays, but the SPF numbers refer to a length of time: SPF 30 means that you can be in the sun 30x longer than without any protection. Lower SPF might be used if someone is looking to get some color, as it does not protect for as long and would need to be reapplied more often for proper sun protection.
